PERSONALITY OVERVIEW
While at first Rory can come off as insecure and a bit of a stick-in-the-mud, especially when compared to people like his wife and the Doctor, he's actually a very brave and loyal individual. This becomes especially apparent where his wife is concerned. Not only was he willing to wait 2000 years for her as partly a machine, but he has also thrown himself into terrible danger time and time again just for her. He spent his whole life pining for her and if there is one person he would destroy the universe to save, it's Amy Pond. However, she is not the only one Rory trusts or is fiercely loyal to. By this point in his life, Rory also holds a high regard for the Doctor as well, especially after he moved beyond his jealousy of the alien.
That jealously mostly came from a misunderstanding of Amy and the Doctor's relationship, often making him feel like a third wheel. It took Rory awhile to realize that Amy felt the same way about him that he did. Rory may not always seem like the brightest crayon in the box but he's by no means stupid, he just fails to see the obvious sometimes--especially when it comes to people. He is extremely empathetic and trusting of others, which has gotten him in bad situations a number of times. However, he still somehow manages to see the good in people and err on the side of optimism -- at least in regards to the choices people will make. His pessimistic side comes out more-so in regards to his own luck (as experience has shown him that he has ROTTEN luck).
Despite that, Rory actually is a pretty quick learner. Not only did he go out of his way to learn about the possible mechanics of the TARDIS, but even when confronted with challenges like riding a motorcycle or figuring out a new piece of technology he is fairly quick on the uptake. He is just not as curious about things as Amy or the Doctor and that makes him a very down to Earth person. He is sensible and appreciates normalcy. However, he is not opposed to a little adventure, otherwise why would he be with Amy at all? Rory is there to attempt to ground the two, but it often does not work very well and he has to go chasing off after them anyways.
While he is loyal to Amy, he also puts a lot of faith in her as well. Even when Amy says otherwise, Rory will not stop doubting that Amy will be there for him no matter what and that he can save her or will try to save her no matter what the cost. It is this devotion that could lead to his downfall and while Rory is aware of this fact, it does not bother him.
Despite his complaints about the adventures they have, Rory is very brave. Sure, he gets scared at times and would rather not put himself in more danger, but he does it anyway because he would never back down from helping his friends and he knows what he needs to do in order to help Amy and the Doctor.
